Medical Professional Reviews

“As a full-time bariatric surgeon and Medical Director of an ASMBS Accredited Center of Excellence in Bariatric Surgery, I require my patients to undergo a psychological evaluation to ensure their preparedness for surgery, and evaluate each patient’s individual stressors. Dr. Shapiro is on the top of my list of bariatric psychologists. As a committed Bariatric Psychologist, she has expertise in the psychological, behavioral, and emotional aspects of obesity. My patients consistently report that they feel that they left the evaluation having learned a great deal about themselves, their lifestyle, their family and work stressors and the impact that these things have on their health. They feel that she offers the tools that they need to overcome obstacles that stand between them and successfully gaining control of their weight and their lives. I heard such glowing reviews from my patients who had pre-operative evaluations with her that I asked her to take over my post-operative support groups! Dr. Shapiro’s warmth, trust, empathy, and ability to guide a group has enhanced my practice and my patient’s success immeasurably. Thank you, Dr. Shapiro! Dr. Shapiro is my go-to person for consultations about clients who are struggling with obesity or problematic eating behavior.”

“I have known Dr. Shapiro for almost 10 years. She is nationally recognized in the eating disorders and obesity field and she is my top referral choice for a bariatric psychologist in San Diego. Dr. Shapiro excels in her work with individuals both pre and post bariatric surgery. Pre-operatively, she works with patients to help prepare them for the behavioral and emotional changes that are associated with surgery. Post-operatively, she assists patients in making the lifestyle changes necessary for long-term success. Dr. Shapiro cares about all of her patients and wants to help make them feel better. She is compassionate and sensitive regarding the emotional issues and struggles of obese individuals but never compromises her honesty, humor, and trust. Patients truly seem to enjoy working with Dr. Shapiro and feel at ease when talking to her about the physical and psychological changes after bariatric
surgery.”

“Dr. Shapiro represents a perfect balance of evidence-based techniques and enthusiasm. She inspires her patients to achieve their treatment goals and gives her all to help them get there. She has rich training and experience with both eating disorders and weight management. She is not a one-approach-fits-all therapist. She will work with each patient to tailor a plan that addresses her or his specific needs. Above all, she is dedicated to improving the health and well-being of her clients.”

“Dr. Jennifer Shapiro is a knowledgeable, skilled, and caring clinician who incorporates best practices in evidence-based health interventions with the individual needs, backgrounds, and life experiences of her clients. She is a rare gem of a therapist whose background and experience treating eating and weight disorders sets her apart from many therapists in this field. Her patients undoubtedly benefit from her passion for improving the lives of so many who suffer from eating and weight disorders.”

“As a busy clinician who treats patients with obesity, with both surgical and non-surgical therapies, I have great confidence that Dr. Shapiro will provide my patients with the psychological support they need. Not only is she caring and compassionate, but I know they are in the hands of a professional with vast expertise and experience in this field, not to mention her national recognition. I have no hesitations referring my patients to Dr. Shapiro.”

“Dr. Shapiro is a highly-skilled, experienced, and accomplished professional with expertise in Cognitive Behavioral Treatment of weight and eating-related disorders. Her work at Structure House, a residentially-based behavioral weight management center in North Carolina, was outstanding and helped her develop expertise in treating obesity, often with individuals who’ve struggled with weight their entire lives. We are fortunate to continue to have her as a colleague and contributor to Structure House-based programs by providing online and phone therapy in our SHOW program. Dr. Shapiro is one of our top referral sources for our San Diego patients when they leave Structure House and return to home.”

Patient Reviews

“Dr. Shapiro, It is impossible to sum up my gratitude toward you in writing. You may never know how much I’ve appreciated having you as a friend and roll model for the past 2 years. All of your help will always be remembered and it is my promise to you and myself that I will overcome my battles and come out on top. Thanks for everything!!! “
Adolescent with an eating disorder
“I had always labeled myself and emotional eater. I really didn’t know what that meant, but even in the healthiest of times, my food demons were right around the corner. There is that gray area of binging (friends/loved ones saying, “you’re just hungry)”, fasting (thinking it’s a healthy fast) and before you know it…you are so restricted in your diet, everything feels like cheating and/or guilt. Dr. Brittney helped not only identify those feelings, but get me to a point of acceptance. I cut the cord with my “goal weight clothes” and started working on the deeper issues that manifested in food, eating and self-image. They give you the tools and skills…judgement free and at the pace you can handle it.”
Adult Patient
“I have had problems with food for as long as I can remember. I have fluctuated between restricting my food intake with rigid rules and having out of control binge eating episodes. Over the years, I have tried to work through my eating disorder with several nutritionists. These people did not understand that my eating disorder needed a personal approach that works for my brain, body, and lifestyle. I have an incredibly sensitive stomach and eating can always be challenging. I am grateful that I have been able to work with Tiffany and her methods have been life-changing for me. I am recovering from my disordered eating habits and beginning to find peace with the shape of my body. Before I started seeing Tiffany, I did not believe I could ever feel okay when I looked in a refrigerator or in the mirror.”
Adult Patient
“Having been a part of this group with Brittney continues to be an invaluable component to my recovery process. Most of the skills that are shared have been useful in all areas of my life beyond the eating disorder, including personal accountability! They’ve all become such necessary tools for every facet of life. I couldn’t be more grateful for the support I’ve received from the group, and the multiple perspectives that have added to my understanding and empathy towards others. Thank you for all of the knowledge and encouragement, so fortunate to have this help available, when it was needed.”
