Dr. Jennifer Shapiro
Jennifer Shapiro, PhD is the Founder and Director of everyBody Behavioral Health. She is a fully licensed clinical psychologist in CA (#22739), IA (134989), MS (63 1156), NM (2023-0107), NY (027454), TX (39773), VA (0810008447), VT (048.0134933), and WA (61146546), and can also provide services in many other states (please inquire for details).
Dr. Shapiro earned her PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University at Albany, State University of New York in 2004, under the mentorship of Dr. Drew Anderson. From the start of her doctoral training in 1999, she focused on Eating Disorders and Obesity. She completed her clinical internship at Duke University Medical Center, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, where she worked in several disordered eating clinics including the Duke Eating Disorders Program, Structure House, Inc., and the Weight Loss Surgery Program.
Following her PhD, Dr. Shapiro completed a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Department of Psychiatry, Eating Disorders Program, under the mentorship of renowned expert Dr. Cynthia Bulik. Upon completion, she was promoted to Assistant Professor in the same department, working with patients across all levels of care — inpatient, partial hospitalization, and outpatient. She developed evidence-based group programs for Weight Management, Bulimia Nervosa, and Binge Eating Disorder, and trained graduate students and medical residents in the treatment of eating disorders and obesity.
In 2009, Dr. Shapiro moved to Southern California and founded everyBody Behavioral Health with the goal of working with every body—regardless of shape or size. She is one of the few clinicians with advanced training and expertise in both Eating Disorders and Obesity, allowing her to understand the full spectrum of disordered eating and its underlying psychological, behavioral, and relational factors. Her approach focuses on improving both physical and mental health, whether through weight restoration to prevent malnutrition, weight loss to enhance health and quality of life, improving body image and acceptance, or addressing disordered eating behaviors regardless of weight goals.
Dr. Shapiro has a special interest in working with pre- and post-bariatric surgery patients. She collaborates with surgeons across the U.S. to provide behavioral health assessments prior to surgery, help patients modify unhealthy eating practices, support post-operative behavior change, and assist those who experience weight recurrence or regain.
“I pride myself on meeting patients where they are, rather than coming in with my own agenda. I am mindful of the weight-related biases patients often encounter, as well as how comorbidities such as depression, anxiety, self-esteem, and relationship difficulties influence eating behavior and weight.”
In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Shapiro has directed research studies on disordered eating and obesity, published numerous scientific papers, and regularly presents at local and national medical conferences. She served on the executive board of the San Diego Chapter of the International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals (IAEDP) from 2012–2017 and is recognized as an IAEDP Certified Eating Disorders Specialist. She also presents at the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) Annual Meeting and serves as an ASMBS mentor for junior clinicians.
For Fun
I enjoy spending time with my young daughter, dog Oscar, and as my large family, including 8 nieces and nephews who all live in San Diego. I also have fun hosting dinner parties for friends in my home, taking pictures, and scrapbooking. Traveling is one of my passions, and I appreciate experiencing different cultures and my goal is to visit as many countries as possible.
